Why Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 Will Be A Winter Tournament

Why Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 Will Be A Winter Tournament

04 April, 2022

The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be held in the Middle East for the first time, with Qatar serving as the first Gulf nation to host the mega event. The decision to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 was made as part of FIFA's pledge to hold at least one major international tournament in the region before 2030. Despite widespread opposition to the Qatar 2022 tournament, FIFA decided to proceed with the event in the Middle Eastern country.

During the final vote in 2010, FIFA chose Qatar over rival bids from Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the United States. While the FIFA World Cup is usually held in the summer, the event in Qatar in 2022 will be held in the winter. The decision was primarily motivated by the country's scorching summer temperatures. According to Sportingnews.com, Qatar is experiencing excessive heat, with even average temperatures at the end of April reaching around 92 degrees Fahrenheit (33 C). Winter temperatures in Qatar, particularly in the Doha region, average between 70 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (21 and 25 degrees Celsius), compared to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) in the region's summer.
