Liverpool win Carabao Cup final after beating Chelsea in penalty shootout

28 February, 2022

Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the final of the League Cup on penalties. It is the first time in five years that the competition was not won by Manchester City.

Liverpool wins the League Cup for a record ninth time, it was previously tied on eight with City while Chelsea has won it five times, most recently in 2015. Chelsea, which has already won the Club World Cup this month, lost on its last visit to Wembley Stadium to Leicester in the FA Cup final last season.

After an entertaining 120 minutes of action, the 2022 Carabao Cup final was decided by a penalty shootout as Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga smashed his penalty high over the crossbar. Kepa was the only player to miss in the shoot-out as Liverpool converted all 11 of their kicks and Chelsea netted 10.

The Spaniard replaced Edouard Mendy in the final minutes of extra time. However, Kepa failed to reproduce some of his recent heroics and then shot his kick wildly over the bar

It was a fittingly tense conclusion to a thrilling encounter that finished 0-0 after extra-time despite both sides creating numerous chances.

Liverpool had a Joel Matip goal controversially disallowed for a dubious offside against Virgil van Dijk in the second half.

Chelsea were denied three times by the offside flag, with Blues boss Thomas Tuchel furious that Romelu Lukaku's effort didn't survive a VAR check

Kai Havertz thought he had scored the winner only for the offside flag to be raised - one of four goals to be chalked off during the match.

Liverpool's record ninth League Cup triumph was their first domestic knockout tournament triumph since 2012.
