International Youth Day: FRSC charges Corps Members on road safety standard

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has charged the members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to imbibe the road safety standard whenever they were driving to ensure sanity on the road.

Mr Segun Ogungbemide, the Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC gave the advice at the 2021 United Nations International Youth Day organises by the sector command on Thursday.

Ogungbemide who was represented by Deputy Corps Commander (DCC) Cyril Matthew said it was expected to enlighten the the youth on the need for food preservation through the use of technology.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sector command holds United Nations International Youth Day 2021 with NYSC members with the theme: Transforming Food System: Youth Innovation For Human and Planetary Health.

The sector commander said that united nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at ensuring sustainability across board towards wealth creation, job creation and preservation of resources for future generation.

"As you may know the FRSC is a government organisation with passion for youths development in addition to ensuring safety of lives on our expressway.

"In line with the SDGs 17 on partnership, the FRSC has brought together experts in the food industry to join in the campaign and enlightenment of the youths towards achievement the abundant food technology regime.

"Interestingly, there can be no sustainability in the food technology without transportation, hence the place of the road safety," he said.

According to him, the federal government is also engaging in diversification of various resources to reduce the dependency on oil, which is aimed at helping to create more jobs for the youths.

Ogungbemide said we must all get involved in the drive to ensure the government achieve a sustainable food regime.

He added that all hands must be on deck to support the SDGs and government drive to create and employment for the teeming youths.

"As we also use this opportunity to call on well meaning Nigerian citizens and other key stakeholders to support our youths in the quest to achieve excellence as the future of this country lies with our youths," he said.

Chief Adebola Ajibola, one of the Guest Speaker at the event in his remarks said that something must be done urgently to reduce crashes in the country.

"In Nigeria we have lost many celebrities to road crashes like Dagrin and others and all these are avoidable if there is effective sensitisations for the motorists.

"Speeding, lack of spare tyres, dangerous driving characterised the way our youths drive in the society which at the end of the day result to candle night session.

"We need to pay more attention to road signs and ensure our vehicles are in good conditions before we embark on a journey," he said.

According to him, no journey worth speeding as life has no duplicate we need to be careful when we are driving.

He said that celebrities sensitisations would go a long way to curb crashes as many motorists.

Mrs Atinuke Akanbi, Research Scientist/Public Health Nutritionist Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi also a Guest Speaker also advised the youths to be conscious of road signs whenever they are driving.

"Youths made up of 80 per cent of workforce, at that point they make use of the road in their course of productions.

"Transportation is paramount to food sustainability and planetary health so, we need to apply consciousness on safety especially on the road while transporting our food items," she said.
