How times flies, it is now 10years that the Oba Yekini Elegushi passed on, like the adverbial adage that it is always good to remember one’s father with an event that will constantly remind people of the departed, and his virtues while alive, instead of throwing big parties and shindigs.

In remembrance the ideals of the late Oba Yekini Adeniyi Elegushi, the charismatic and very avant-garde monarch of Ikateland in Lagos State, HRH, Oba Saheed Elegushi, led other royal family members to a memorial prayer session that was held in honour of the late royal father on Monday 18th November 2019 at the Elegushi’s Palace in Ikate-land, which happened as the 10th year remembrance of their beloved father who passed on a decade ago.

The event, which held amid fanfare, had notable dignitaries in attendance and some special guests present at the occasion included Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), Kayode Opeifa, Abdulfatah Kekere-Ekun, Mr Tayo Ayinde, Oba Tijani Akinloyè (Ojomu of Ajiranland), Oba AbdRaaheed Akanbi (Oluwo of Iwo), Chief Razak Akanni Okoya, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, Oba Moruff Ojoola (Elejigbo of Ejigboland) and others.

It was a sober reflection for all in attendance, as the lecturer of the day, Sheikh Muhydeen Bello left no stone un-turned to remind everyone of the last day. Oba Yekinni Adeniyi Elegushi, the 20th Oba Elegushi of Ikate land, was outlandish as a major royal father when he ruled, and he would forever be remembered in the annals of the history of Ikate land, nay the entire Lagos state, as a ruler who transformed the rural dukedom of ancient Ikateland into a modern royal Kingdom.

To those who did not know the location of Ikate, this new and growing Modern Township controls the strategic approach to, and exit from, the present-day Eti-Osa, now a vital suburb of Lagos. Ikateland includes several towns and villages such as: Alaguntan, (now Elf Town), Orile Ilasan, Itedo, Igbokusu, Gbara, Maiyegun, Iroko Awe, Aro, and Ologolo village.

Oba yekinni Elegushi hailed from Kusenla house of the ruling family, the other three ruling houses being (1) Bakare, (2) Akin Idunfa (3) Odiyan. The Oba who assumed the title of Kusenla ll was born on April 10, 1940, and he was the third of Late Chief Tijani Bamgbala Elegushi, who died in 1968, while his mother was late Madam Lauratu Gbamgbala Elegushi nee Bakare, from Igbokusu.

He started his primary education at the Local Authority Primary School, moba from where he proceeded to St. Stephen's School Lagos, where he passed out. From there he was admitted to western college, Yaba. This ended his formal education.

Oba Yekinni Elegushi was briefly involved in public affairs and politics before his ennoblement to Obaship of Ikateland. In 1971, he accompanied late Chief Dauda Fasanya Elegushi to testify before Joel Ogunnaike Tribunal of Enquiry, together with late Liasu Dosunmu, then Baale of Addo, prince Tijani Akinloye, (then secretary of Ojomu Chieftaincy family), now Oba Ojomu of Ajiran and Mr. Adio Maiyegun. The result of this enquiry was the excision of Eti-Osa Local Council from Ikorodu Division, and merger with the defunct Lagos Island Local Government.

Bubbling with youthful energy and political fervour, Prince Yekinni Elegushi fought an election into the old Lagos Island Local Government Council in December 1976, in the then ward "K" which embraced Eti-Osa, Addo, Maiyegun, Shongotedo, and Ogombo and Okun Aja e.t.c. Areas on a non-party basis. He won a resounding victory against his opponents with the following officially recorded votes.

He was a chartered member of the Lions Club, Idi Iroko, Gateway, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Idi Iroko branch, member of Eko Club, Grand Patron Premier Palace Club, Epetedo, Lagos. Eti-Osa Club, Irepodun Club of Eti-Osa, Eko Foundation and many other elite clubs and organizations in Lagos State.
