The Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting will commence hearing evidence from witnesses today in Abuja.
It would be recalled that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside disagreed with the outcome of the past governorship election in the state with the argument that the election was not free and fair.
They want the Tribunal to cancel the election that was won by Nyesom Wike the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) for a re-run.
Not less than 1,100 witnesses are to be called in during the hearing.
APC and Peterside will call 200 witnesses with material evidence to prove their case. INEC will call about 400 witnesses. Wike, did not attach any figure to his intended witnesses but he has been advised by INEC to present about 300 witnesses within the period of the 10 days given to him.The PDP intends to call 200 witnesses also.
The members of the legal team are: Akinlolu Olujinmi (SAN) who will lead the petitioners’ legal team, while Emmanuel Ukala (SAN) leads Wike’s legal team. Wole Olanipekun (SAN), who leads the team of the petitioners – APC and its candidate, Umana Umana – at the Akwa Ibom State governorship tribunal, is leading PDP’s team at the Rivers State governorship tribunal, with Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) as head of the INEC team.
