Nigerian Navy deactivates 175 illegal refineries, arrests 27 vessels

The Nigeria Navy has disclosed that it has deactivated 175 illegal refineries, arrested 27 vessels under 11 months, Vanguard reports. The Command further revealed that 35,384,718 metric tonnes of illegally refined AGO were evacuated while several pirates, kidnappers hideouts were destroyed. Speaking during his handing over ceremony on Friday, February 4, 2022, the Outgoing Flag Officer Commanding, FOC, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Adm. Sanusi Kazeem Ibrahim said that piracy in Nigeria’s maritime domain reduced. The Police Service Commission (PSC) has emphasised immediate dismissal and prosecution of besmirched officer Abba Kyari over his involvement in the international online fraud syndicate led by Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, Peoples Gazette is reporting. EFCC investigates AMCON’s sale of N144 billion properties seized from fugitives

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC have opened an investigation into suspicious deals over the sales of assets seized by the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) from international fugitives Akanni Aluko and Jide Omokore. The investigation is reported to be causing apprehension in some federal institutions and banks who were involved in the deals. The EFCC recently questioned the Managing Director of AMCON Ahmed Kuru, though there was no official disclosure of details. However, anti-graft sources with knowledge of the matter told Premium Times that the assets sales probe extends to top members of the National Assembly, officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and officials of First Bank and Polaris Bank suspected to have corruptly bought or facilitated sales of assets seized from Messrs Aluko and Omokore. The Senate on Tuesday passed the Civil Aviation Bill, 2022, seeking to repeal the Civil Aviation Act, 2006. The passage followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Aviation at plenary. Presenting the report, Sen. Smart Adeyemi, Chairman of the Committee, said the aim of the bill was to provide an effective legal and institutional framework for the regulation of civil aviation in Nigeria to confirm with the standards and recommended practices set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). He added that the legislation was aimed at establishing rules of operation and divisions of responsibility within the Nigerian civil aviation system in order to promote aviation safety. “It will ensure that Nigerian’s obligations under international aviation agreements are implemented and consolidated,” he said.
