The retired footballer was allegedlly stoned to death for allegedly stealing electrical cable wires.
Maselesele, who played for Amakhosi from 1999 to 2004, was allegedly murdered on Wednesday night, 13 October, 2021 in Tsutsumani, Alexandra, Johannesburg, by a gang of community members. Captain Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the Gauteng police, confirmed his death on Friday, 15 October, 2021.
At about 11.50 p.m. on Wednesday, Masondo said, the police got a complaint that community members were attacking an unknown male.
When the cops arrived, the group fled, but two individuals were captured, according to Masondo.
“It’s alleged that the deceased was accused by the community of stealing electricity cables in the area. He was certified dead on the scene by the paramedics,” he said.
The individuals have been charged with murder, he revealed. On Friday, 15 October, 2021 one of them appeared before the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court, his name withheld by the police. The case was rescheduled to allow for bail applications.
“Police are continuing with the investigation,” said Masondo.
Maselesele’s friends and teammates expressed outrage at the occurrence to City Press yesterday. Isaac Mabotsa, a friend and former Kaizer Chiefs teammate, expressed his sadness.
“I’m very sad. Lucky was like a brother to me. We grew up together. I’m shocked. He was a family friend, not just a friend,” said Mabotsa.
Maselesele, he added, had recently buried his mother. Maselesele was a really lovely person, according to Cosmos Zwane, a former Thanda Royal Zulu teammate.
“He was always joking. He was a jolly guy. You hardly ever found him akwatile [angry], unless he wasn’t in the team – that’s how badly he wanted to play. In the dressing room, there was never a dull moment with him. He was always laughing.”
Zwane claimed he learned about Maselesele’s murder around 4 p.m. on Friday and was unable to sleep that night. “I’m completely shattered.” I simply cannot believe what has occurred.”
Kaizer Chiefs’ spokesperson, Vina Maphosa, said the club was likewise taken aback by the tragic news.
“At this time, our sympathies are with his family and friends,” he said, adding that Maselesele had made a significant contribution to the Kaizer Chiefs during his playing career.
He’d played in roughly 45 games, some of which resulted in the squad winning the trophies they were so proud of.
