Juju music maestro, Sunday Ishola Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade has every reason to thank the almighty God for His mercy and protection over his life.
It was indeed a harvest of thanksgiving for the music legend, members of his band and his entire family as he miraculously escaped an assassination attempt on his life during a live gig in his home town, Ondo.
It was exclusively gathered that the live gig which held on Friday, 26th February was at the instance of a prominent Ondo personality, Chief Akinyelure, the senior cousin to former Minister for Information, Chief Alex Akinyele.
According to a close source to the musician, the afternoon gig was almost getting to its climax around 6 p.m. when criminal elements invaded the venue, shooting sporadically into the air while guests took to their heels in an attempt to escape the flying bullets.
Sources revealed that Sunny Ade and his band members were oblivious of the commotion in and around the venue until they came face-to-face with the evil men who sauntered into the band-stand area wielding dangerous guns and ammunitions and headed straight for the music legend. There and then, it was obvious Sunny Ade was the target of the criminal elements.
“Immediately they sighted King Sunny, one of them fired two shots at him from close range but the bullet was miraculously diverted by one of our security details who was standing close to King Sunny on the stage,“ says our source while narrating the incident.
According to him, the security detail who is called Sunday is the police orderly attached to the musician. He hails from Eruwa in Ibarapa axis of Oyo State. Sunday who has been with the music icon for more than ten years is reported to have embraced super-natural power into the task of securing the life of his principal.
The police orderly was said to have held the bullets fired at the musician and miraculously dropped them on the floor like rubbles.
Seeing that their plot to kill the musician was foiled, the hired assassins reportedly took to their heels and escaped in their cars in the midst of the commotion as many were still scampering for safety.
The incident left the host, Chief Akinyelure, Sunny Ade and members of his African Beats band in a state of shock and melancholy as many wondered why anyone would wish to kill the highly revered musician.
Based on security advice, the musician and his band members immediately left Ondo town around 7p.m. and only arrived in Lagos around 11p.m. same night. They reportedly checked into Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos where they stayed until the following day, Saturday, February 27.
While at Airport Hotel, the visibly shaken musician was inundated with telephone calls from friends, associates, fans and family members over the assassination attempt. However, King Sunny Ade was cool and calm even as many of his associates expressed their displeasure over the incident. “Why are we worrying ourselves when God has not allowed their plan to succeed? We give God the glory,” the musician reportedly told his associates who gathered around him at the swimming pool side of the hotel.
However, as the news of the foiled assassination of the Juju King was reverberating across the Ondo State landscape, it was also gathered that the police have made progress in their investigation as five members of the seven-man gang have been arrested at Akure, the state capital.
The suspects whose names are still being concealed because of the sensitive nature of the case were said to have confessed to police interrogators that they were indeed hired by some people to kill the musician. They reportedly gave the names of the masterminds of the dastardly plot to police investigators and have mounted a manhunt for them.
However, police sources stated that the assassination plot was orchestrated by a powerful clique of musicians who are not happy over Sunny Ade’s looming image and domination of Ondo State social circles. Since his homecoming, he has held Ondo music scene like a colossus without any competition whatsoever.
Investigation revealed that Sunny Ade is the official musician of Ondo State government. He plays at all the state functions and many of the government functionaries have equally made him their number one unofficial musician. Aside this, King Sunny Ade’s relocation to his home town from Lagos about five years ago has also become a source of worry to his adversaries many of whom have lost patronage of prominent indigenes of the state to the juju maestro.
