The 18-year-old defender, who recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars, had collapsed during a Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday.
Chinedu reportedly slumped about 10 to 15 minutes into the game and was immediately rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital for emergency treatment.
He was said to have been pronounced dead by doctors after efforts to revive him failed.
The shocking development sent the football community into mourning, with Katsina United releasing a condolence message while former clubs and teammates, including Kano Pillars and Heartland FC, also paid tributes to the young defender.
But what appeared to be a tragic end took a dramatic turn when movement was reportedly noticed in Chinedu’s body at the mortuary of Katsina General Hospital.
Mortuary workers reportedly observed signs of life and alerted medical personnel, leading to the player being quickly transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.
He was subsequently placed on oxygen as doctors battled to stabilise his condition.
The club’s media officer, Nasir Gide, confirmed the astonishing development, saying Chinedu had reportedly been declared dead twice before signs of life were noticed.
Heartland FC, where the player previously featured, also confirmed that he was alive and undergoing treatment, urging supporters and Nigerians to pray for his recovery.
The incident has raised fresh questions over the circumstances surrounding the initial declaration of death and the medical treatment the player received after collapsing on the football pitch.
As of Wednesday morning, Chinedu remained in critical condition at Katsina General Hospital, with the football community anxiously awaiting further medical updates on his condition.
The shocking sequence of events from collapsing during a football match, to being pronounced dead, mourned by clubs and supporters, and then reportedly showing signs of life inside a mortuary—has left Nigerian football in disbelief.
