Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has moved to Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. This makes him the sixth Nigerian to play for the German team, following in the footsteps of the legendary Austin Okocha.

The 25-year-old completed his transfer from Club Brugge, where he was a key player. He signed a five-year deal that keeps him at Deutsche Bank Park until June 2031. Onyedika will wear the No. 25 shirt as he starts a new journey in Germany.

Onyedika joins a select group of Nigerians at Frankfurt, including Okocha, Henry Isaac, Donald Agu, Nduka Anyanwu, and Isaac Ojigwe.

This move reflects Onyedika’s growth in European football. He has become one of Brugge’s standout players over the last three years.

While in Belgium, Onyedika won two league titles, the Belgian Cup, and the Belgian Super Cup. He also won the Danish Cup earlier in his career with FC Midtjylland.

The Nigerian international has plenty of experience. He has played 268 senior matches across all competitions and appeared in 24 UEFA Champions League games in the past three seasons.

On the international stage, Onyedika has earned 26 caps for Nigeria. He was part of the Super Eagles team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, boosting his status as a top midfielder in Africa.

Markus Krösche, Frankfurt’s sports board member, is excited about the signing. He believes Onyedika can make a quick impact.

“Raphael Onyedika has not only impressed us with his physicality and strategic understanding of the game, but above all with his extraordinary consistency,” Krösche said.

“He has been a regular starter in recent years and has won numerous trophies in Belgium. He also boasts valuable international experience. At 25, he still has great potential and is an important building block in terms of the structure of our squad.”

Onyedika was linked with a move away from Club Brugge since last season. Many clubs were watching his progress after another good year in Belgium.

His transfer to Frankfurt marks a big step in his career as he prepares for the challenges of the Bundesliga and European football.

The former Midtjylland midfielder may make his unofficial debut for Frankfurt in a pre-season friendly against Hull City next weekend. He could also play in the DFB-Pokal first-round match against St. Tönis 1911/20 on 21 August.

For Onyedika, this move is a chance to prove himself in one of Europe’s top leagues. He aims to continue the proud legacy of Nigerian players at Eintracht Frankfurt. With his skill, athleticism, and consistency, the Super Eagles star wants to make a strong impact in the Bundesliga as he faces the biggest challenge of his club career.
