2027 : Islamic clerics charge political leaders on accountability, trust
Islamic clerics in Lagos State have charged political leaders to prioritise accountability, trust, and fairness in governance as election period approaches.
The clerics gave the charge on Tuesday, at a Ramadan Iftar Lecture, held at the All Progressives Congress Party (APC) Secretariat, Abule Egba, Alimosho Local Government Area.
The Ramadan Lecture was organised by Alhaji Abdullahi Okikiola, Leader of City Boy Movement Canada.
in his lecture,a Muslim Missioner,Imam Olayinka Abubakar, said that political leaders needed to address poverty, and poor living conditions, especially in the community.
The cleric said that neglect of accountability by leaders in the society has eroded public trust in government.
“Just as the topic says, ‘Leadership as a Trust’, whoever has been chosen to lead, just as Allah has mandated, must be accountable.
“Whoever it is entrusted to should use the opportunity to serve the public effectively.
“Leadership is sacrifice; a good leader sacrifices for his or her own subordinates and he is accountable,” he said.
According to him, many leaders act as though they own the world because they are not held accountable.
He added that leaders should always know they cannot be in their offices forever and that they must give account to the Almighty, after life.
The missioner advised parents and guardians to ensure their wards are useful to the society by ensuring they acquire knowledge and skills for future opportunities.
“Let’s train our children so they do not become nuisance to the community,” the cleric added.
He also advised the electorate to cast their vote wisely during the elections, adding that each and everyone must vote according to their conscience
“Everybody should vote according to their conscience, if you vote your conscience, then you will be able to talk. If the person elected is not doing fine, you will be able to say your own opinion,” he added.
Alhaji Raji Mahmood, the Acting Amir Alimosho Local Government,in his remarks, said that citizens should always position themselves not just as moral voices, but also as active participants to shape political outcomes
“This year is a unique year because both of us are observing the fasting together both Muslim and Christian.
“We started that same day, we started the same Wednesday and we are fasting and praying.
“We are praying for cooperation and unity with understanding.
“Concerning the coming election, may God spare our lives beyond that day, because we have done the homework on that.
“Both Muslims and Christians and non-Muslim too, who are politicians, are doing a lot to ensure it is a successful one.
“We believe that everything will come to reality by God’s grace,” he said.
Mr Mukaila Yunusa,, the APC Party Chairman Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA),said that the lecture was an eye opener about leadership and followership.
“Leadership is all about sacrifice and selflessness, this is real food for thought. The lecture is an eye opener,” he said.(NAN)
