World Drug Day 2026: Alimosho LG Chairman, Hon. Akinpelu, Condemns Drug Abuse, Warns Against Its Devastating Impact

The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has lent his voice to the global campaign against hard drug use, drug abuse, and illicit trafficking as the world marks the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day).

The annual observance raises awareness about the dangers posed by illicit drugs and reinforces global efforts toward building a society free from drug abuse.

In a statement released through his media office, Hon. Akinpelu strongly condemned the use of hard drugs, describing drug abuse as a destructive menace that has devastated countless lives, homes, businesses, and careers.

According to him, “Today, and as always, I stand firmly against hard drug use because nothing good has ever come from it. It has destroyed many homes, businesses, and careers. Those who engage in drug abuse often become consumed by addiction, prioritizing substance use over productive ventures, thereby draining their investments, savings, and future prospects. It is a major disaster that diverts attention from meaningful goals and hinders personal growth.”

The Chairman further expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of young people, especially secondary school students, in drug abuse.

He stated, “One of the most painful realities is that young people, particularly students in secondary schools, are increasingly being introduced to drugs. This is deeply disturbing and raises serious concerns about the future of our society. Drug abuse has become so widespread that it is difficult to find a community where it does not exist.”

Reaffirming government’s commitment to combating the menace, Hon. Akinpelu emphasized that efforts to curb drug abuse would continue at all levels.“As a government, we are doing our best to fight this menace, and we will not relent in our efforts. I also commend the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its continued dedication and remarkable work in cracking down on drug traffickers and merchants,” he added.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was established by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a drug-free society.
