The United States Mission in Nigeria has disclosed that the construction of its new Consulate Compound in Lagos will inject more than $95 million into the Nigerian economy.

The US Mission made this known in a statement on Wednesday following the topping-off ceremony held on Tuesday, October 6, to mark the completion of the highest structural point of the 10-storey building at Eko Atlantic City.

The project, according to the US Mission, is already contributing significantly to the local economy through the engagement of employees, subcontractors and suppliers across Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria.

“Through this project, more than 1,500 Nigerian workers have received training to the highest construction standards in the world, strengthening their competitiveness in the local labour market long after the construction is complete.

“The project is currently being led by 120 Nigerian engineers, architects, and administrators, working alongside 43 American construction professionals,” the US Mission said.

The new Consulate Compound is being constructed as part of efforts to deepen the relationship between the United States and Nigeria.

Speaking at the ceremony, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Public Diplomacy, Richard Michaels, said the facility was designed to reflect the strength of the relationship between both countries.

“This New Consulate Compound reflects cutting-edge construction and engineering techniques, built to the highest US standards for design and construction, and standing as a lasting symbol of what our two nations can achieve together,” Michaels said.

He added that the project demonstrates America’s investment in Nigeria’s future, noting that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, is strategically positioned to drive shared prosperity between both countries.

US Consul General, Brandon Hudspeth, also welcomed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior Nigerian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, representatives of US companies and Nigerian alumni of US government exchange programmes to the ceremony.

They participated in the ceremonial pouring of the final bucket of structural concrete onto the roof of the 10-storey Chancery building.

Hudspeth said the project goes beyond the construction of a diplomatic facility.

“That is what we are building here at Eko Atlantic City. Not just a building, but the foundation for the next chapter of our partnership,” he said.
