NCC: Globacom leads internet subscribers’ growth

Globacom’s ongoing investment in expanding and strengthening its network is yielding positive results, with the company recording the highest Internet subscriber growth among Nigeria’s major telecom operators in May. Latest figures released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) show that Globacom added about 1.2 million Internet subscribers during the month, accounting for nearly half of the country’s total increase of 2.67 million subscribers.

Overall, Nigeria’s Internet subscriber base grew from about 154.3 million in April to about 157 million in May. Globacom’s subscriber base increased from about 15.5 million to 16.8 million. Airtel Nigeria followed with an addition of about 1.07 million subscribers to reach 55.8 million, while MTN Nigeria added 382,894 subscribers, increasing its total from about 83.1 million to about 83.5 million.

While the leading operators continued to record growth, T2 Mobile, formerly 9mobile, posted no increase for the second consecutive month, with its Internet subscriber base remaining at 802,534. This is despite the national roaming agreement approved by the NCC nearly a year ago, allowing T2 subscribers to use MTN Nigeria’s network in locations where its own coverage is limited.

Behind Globacom’s strong performance is the company’s ongoing nationwide network renewal and expansion project, which began last year.

The programme includes the deployment of thousands of new base stations to extend coverage to new locations and strengthen the network in areas with growing populations, helping to improve both voice and data services across the country.

Beyond adding new base stations, Globacom is expanding its fibre optic network and relocating infrastructure affected by road construction in several parts of the country. The company has also deployed thousands of 4G LTE sites this year across key cities and communities, improving network reach in both urban and rural areas.

Together, these investments are delivering better network quality and a more reliable experience for customers. They also highlight Globacom’s continued focus on expanding connectivity and meeting the growing demand for quality Internet services across Nigeria.
