20 August, 2023

In an act of inclusivity and respect for traditional beliefs, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, the traditional ruler of Ikate Kingdom, has expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and other state governors for officially recognizing Isese Day, the traditional festival celebration.

The king emphasized that this recognition is not only well-deserved but also promotes equality and unity among diverse religious groups.

Speaking during the celebration of Isese Day at his palace, Oba Elegushi highlighted the importance of granting traditional worshipers their own holiday. He emphasized that traditional worshippers are an integral part of society, belonging to the same community as adherents of other faiths, and should be accorded the same level of respect and recognition. He drew parallels with the holidays observed by Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.

Temitope Oyefeso, the Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the traditional ruler, quoted Oba Elegushi as expressing his happiness that the government has finally acknowledged the importance of Isese Day and included it on the calendar, not only in Lagos State but also in some other southwestern states. Oba Elegushi further urged the federal government to take the necessary steps to declare Isese Day a national holiday. He emphasized that believers who do not adhere to Christianity or Islam also contribute significantly to the peace and progress of the country.

Isese Day, celebrated annually on the 20th of August, is a commemoration of traditional religions and worship. The recent recognition by the Lagos State Government and other state governors signifies a significant step towards appreciating and honoring the cultural and religious diversity of Nigeria.

In conclusion, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi's commendation of the government's recognition of Isese Day highlights the growing acceptance and inclusivity of traditional religions in Nigeria. The call for national holiday status reflects the king's desire for equal recognition of all religious beliefs and contributions towards the country's prosperity and harmony.
