Arsenal suffer first defeat of the season as Tottenham’s misery continues

Brighton & Hove Albion scored twice in the first half to secure a 3-0 win over Arsenal in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.

Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas, and Chema Andres were all on the scoresheet as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal misfired for the first time this season.

The cagey affair swung in Brighton’s favour in the 31st minute when Gross collected a Kostoulas pass and buried his shot into the far corner for the lead, and the teenage Greek striker turned goalscorer before the break with a clinical finish on the stroke of halftime.

The Seagulls put the game out of the Gunners’ reach with a 57th-minute Andres strike to seal all three points for the hosts.

Defeat ended the EPL champions’ winning start to the season in the league and all competitions. It also ended Arsenal’s run of six matches without defeat at Brighton, and Arteta’s side dropped to second on the EPL log while Brighton rose to third.

In other matches, Tottenham scored their first league goals of the season but continued their losing streak with a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa. The Lillywhites are bottom of the league with no points after five matches. Newcastle United returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Hull City, who suffered their first league defeat of the season.
