Monthly sanitation: Be ready for clean-up, council boss urges resident

By Kazeem Akande

Mr Lukmon Agbaje, Chairman, Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in Lagos State, has urged residents to gear up for the reintroduction of monthly environmental sanitation to boost the state’s cleanliness drive.

Agbaje, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos, warned residents of the area against indiscriminate refuse dumping to make the sanitation drive a success.

According to him, the exercise will focus on clearing drainage channels to prevent flooding, with proper waste disposal to reduce road damage and environmental hazards.

NAN reports that the Lagos State Government has reintroduced its monthly environmental exercise , starting from April 25.

The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., targeting drainage clearances to curb flooding.

“Residents should plan ahead to clean streets, markets, and public spaces for a cleaner Lagos.

“We need to prevent flooding and discourage indiscriminate dumping that blocks drainage systems, causing persistent flooding in the community,” he said.

The chairman said cleaner environments reduce disease outbreak risks, adding that the government emphasises sanitation is a shared responsibility.

Agbaje urged residents to avoid dumping refuse in unauthorised spots like road medians and to join the sanitation actively.

“We want you to take responsibility for keeping your immediate environment.

“Non-compliance could worsen flooding and environmental degradation, especially in the rainy season.

“Set aside time on the last Saturday of each month for cleaning, dispose properly, use designated waste collection points, and avoid roadside dumping.

“Organise neighbourhood clean-ups to maximise impact, stay informed and watch for announcements from your local council about enforcement and monitoring,” he said.

The chairman warned residents not to ignore the exercise, saying the LCDA will enforce rules strictly during the sanitation period.

“We want full participation, and enforcement will be strict – we’ll be monitoring,” Agbaje said.

He tasked waste collection services to deliver effectively and support the exercise.(NAN)
