The death has been announced of the first indigenous coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, aged 88.Nigerian Current Affairs

This was disclosed by his family through Mrs Bolade Adesuyi in a statement sent to newsmen on Monday night.

She said coach Onigbinde died earlier on Monday.

Part of the statement reads, “With great gratitude to God for a life well spent. We announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the 1st indegenous Nigerian Super Eagles football coach, father, husband, grand father, great grand father, brother, and friend High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde who passed unto the great beyond a couple of minutes ago.

“We thank God for a fulfilled life and your contributions to the Nigeria nation and the world as a unequalled football coach.

“We pray that your soul will rest perfectly in the bossom of your & our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Good night till we meet to part no more.”

The statement noted that the final funeral arrangements will be communicated later.

Pa Onigbinde marked his 88th birthday on March 5, 2026.

He took Nigeria’s men Senior team to the 2002 World Cup.

He coached Nigeria between 1982-84 winning Silver in 1984 after losing 1-3 to Cameroon in the final in 1984.

He later held positions, including serving as special adviser to Osun state government on football.
