IWD: Lagos council chairmen celebrate women in grassroots development
The Executive Chairman, Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State, Mrs Oyeyemi Akindele, has joined millions worldwide in celebrating 2026 International Women’s Day, recognising the vital contributions of women to grassroots development.
Akindele in a statement on Sunday marking the occasion of the International Women’s Day said that there are many roles women play as mothers, teachers, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and political leaders to develop community.
The council chairman added that the courage, wisdom, and dedication women brought to homes, workplaces, and leadership positions made lots of impact on societal growth and stability.
“As this year’s celebration is themed, “Give To Gain,” we emphasised that women’s selfless contributions through time, knowledge, compassion, and leadership styles drive progress and social harmony,” she said.
According to her, the sacrifices women make often quietly lay the foundation for sustainable development in communities.
Akindele also said that the transformative power of women’s participation in politics and governance could not be over emphasised.
She added that inclusive leadership brought empathy, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility to decision-making, strengthening both local and national institutions.
“Focusing on Mosan Okunola LCDA we celebrate the council’s hardworking women, including market traders, artisans, professionals, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, whose dedication continues to drive local growth and development.
“We also encouraged women to persist in giving their best to society.
“When women lead with courage, ideas, and compassion, the entire community benefits,” the chairman said.
The council chairman however, urged the continued creation of a society where women were empowered, opportunities were broadened, leadership were inclusive, and the well-being of the community remained a top priority.
“Happy International Women’s Day. we celebrate the strength, resilience, and remarkable achievements of women everywhere,” she added.
Mr Johnson Akinpelu, the Executive Chairman Alimosho Local Government council, has joined voices across the globe to celebrate the 2026 International Women’s Day.
Akinpelu said that the annual event provides an opportunity to recognise and appreciate the invaluable contributions of women to society’s growth and development.
The chairman said that the occasion also meant to renew commitments toward promoting equality, fairness, and opportunities for all.

The council boss commended the remarkable role women continue to play in nation-building and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of progress, justice, and equality.
The Chairman also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of Alimosho Local Government.
