$1.5bn fresh loan: Atiku reveals how much each Nigerian now owes as debt hits N166.79tn

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said each Nigerian now owes N716,822 as the country’s total debt profile grew to N166.79 trillion as of June 2026.

Atiku made the disclosure in a statement by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, on Monday.

This comes amid reports that the Nigerian government is seeking a fresh N1.5 trillion loan from the World Bank.

DAILY POST reports that the Debt Management Office, DMO, said the country’s total debt profile stood at N166.79 trillion at the end of June 2026.

Reacting, Atiku said Tinubu’s record is an indictment of his economic stewardship, adding that families are struggling to afford food, fuel and electricity, yet the debt continues to climb.

“If Nigeria’s public debt were divided among everyone, each person’s share would be N716,822 today. Three years ago, it was N383,442. That is an 87 per cent increase,” Atiku said.

“Tinubu has made today difficult and tomorrow more uncertain,” he added.
